RBC Car Insurance Discounts, Claims & the Catch

I put RBC car insurance through a real side-by-side test against several competitors, and the exercise revealed a lot about how the platform actually operates for Canadian drivers. RBC short for Royal Bank of Canada runs its insurance arm as part of a much larger financial network that millions of Canadians already rely on for banking, so trust isn’t the issue here.

The online quote engine asks a handful of questions and returns a number in about three minutes flat, and that speed is the whole point: RBC wants you buying a policy without ever picking up the phone or walking into a branch. I also ran the same details through a few rival insurance companies, and the exercise confirmed something industry surveys already show drivers who compare quotes regularly end up saving hundreds of dollars a year.

This review focuses on one big question is bundling actually worth it? RBC lets you combine home insurance, life insurance, and auto insurance under a single account, with every auto policy underwritten by Aviva Canada and backed by a 24/7 emergency claims line. Add in loyalty-based bundling discounts and quote turnaround that beat my expectations, and RBC starts to look like a serious contender for anyone who wants one provider handling everything.

History RBC Car Insurance Company Background

RBC’s roots go back further than most people assume. A small Merchants Bank first opened its doors in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1864 three years before Canada even existed as a country and that timeline still catches people off guard when I mention it.

That regional bank eventually became Royal Bank of Canada, now the largest bank in the country and, as of 2016, a business pulling in nearly $42 billion in annual revenue. Corporate operations now run out of both Toronto and Montreal, and the insurance division alone serves roughly four million customers with a staff of about 2,500 employees.

Auto policies flow through RBC Insurance Agency Ltd. but are actually underwritten by Aviva General Insurance Company. Coverage isn’t universal, though British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan are excluded entirely, since those provinces run their own public insurance systems. Everywhere else, RBC offers car, home, travel, and life insurance for individuals, families, and groups, giving it a solid, if geographically limited, presence in the auto insurance space.

RBC Car Insurance Coverage Options

Building my quote, the deductible slider had the biggest visible effect on price. Choose a higher deductible and the premium drops; choose a lower one and you pay less out of pocket if something happens. The quote tool isn’t limited to standard cars either it prices motorcycles, motorhomes, snowmobiles, ATVs, trailers, and even collector or classic vehicles.

Every standard policy includes liability coverage (called civil liability in Quebec), accident benefits for lost wages and medical costs, and uninsured or unidentified motorist coverage in case an at-fault driver can’t be traced or has no insurance at all.

From there, collision coverage handles crash-related repairs, comprehensive coverage deals with fire and theft, and all-perils or specified-perils coverage bundles both into one policy including protection if your vehicle is declared a total loss. RBC positions all of this as customizable for both individual drivers and business fleets.

Discounts & Ways to Save

The savings on RBC Car Insurance add up through several channels rather than one big discount. Getting a quote online alone triggers an automatic 5% discount, and the Family Friendly Pricing Program rewards anyone bundling home, auto, and life policies together under one household.

Smaller discounts stack on top of that: insuring more than one vehicle, maintaining a clean claims history, qualifying as a retiree, installing winter tires, or fitting an anti-theft device. The biggest single discount on RBC Car Insurance, though, goes to RBC’s own employees up to 25% off auto policies and 10% off home coverage which says something about how the company prices risk internally versus externally.

Add Ons & Special Programs

RBC doesn’t chase trendy features like pay-per-kilometer or usage-based pricing. Instead, it offers a short, practical list of optional add-ons. The Family Protection endorsement kicks in when an immediate family member is hit by an underinsured or unidentified at-fault driver, paying out based on the vehicle’s sale price up to the policy’s financial limit.

The Waiver of Depreciation endorsement locks in a new vehicle’s original value for 24 months, so a total-loss payout isn’t reduced by depreciation during that window. The Loss of Vehicle Use endorsement covers a rental or alternate transportation while your car sits in the shop.

RBC also forgives a driver’s first at-fault accident, protecting their record and rate through an accident forgiveness plan. The Satellite program rounds things out with roadside basics towing, fuel delivery, flat-tire service, up to four calls per term plus two trip-planning sessions. None of this is groundbreaking, but it covers the situations most drivers actually run into.

Claims Emergency Service

RBC’s claims department operates around the clock, seven days a week. You can reach an advisor through the toll-free number 1-800-769-2526, by dialing #722 on a Bell or Rogers mobile line, or if you’re stuck outside Canada or the U.S. by placing a collect call to 905-608-8945.

Filing doesn’t require a phone call at all, though: the Online Insurance portal lets policyholders submit and track a claim from a browser at any hour, which matters most when an accident happens somewhere without cell service or late at night.

Other Products RBC Offers

RBC Car Insurance is one piece of a much larger product lineup. On the property side, RBC insures homes, condos, and rental units, plus seasonal properties, secondary homes, and rental properties leased out to tenants.

Travel insurance covers emergency medical expenses, lost baggage, trip cancellation, and trip interruption, with both single-trip and multi-trip annual plans, including options aimed at seniors and visitors to Canada.

The life insurance lineup includes term, whole, and universal life policies, alongside personal accident, disability, and critical illness coverage meant to replace income during a serious health event. Hospital insurance fills gaps left by workplace or provincial health plans, and loan insurance protects mortgage, credit card, and line-of-credit balances if the policyholder loses their job or becomes ill.

On the commercial side, RBC Car Insurance providers also sell key-person business insurance along with group auto, home, health, dental, and disability plans built for employers.

Consumer Reviews for RBC Insurance

Opinions on RBC vary sharply by region. Reviews out of Alberta, Atlantic Canada, Ontario, and Quebec don’t paint a single consistent picture, and the province-level data available publicly is too sparse to draw a firm conclusion about where RBC performs best or worst.

Is There an App

There’s no dedicated mobile app for RBC car insurance a gap I didn’t expect from a major bank. Policyholders manage everything through the RBC Online Insurance hub, a browser-based portal used for policy changes and claims alike.

Pros and Cons: Is It Worth It? Alternatives

The price argument for RBC is real. Multiple Reddit threads describe drivers saving $30 to $40 a month compared to similarly structured policies elsewhere, and the fully digital sign-up process removes a lot of friction most insurers still rely on.

The complaints, though, are just as consistent. Trustpilot reviews frequently mention long hold times, dropped calls, no call-back option, and renewal calls that stretch up to two hours with pointed questioning about claims history.

Renewal pricing is the sharpest criticism. Some policyholders report premiums tripling with little explanation one widely shared Reddit post described a $1,500 jump after only minor vehicle damage, with an adjuster who was nearly impossible to reach afterward.

If a low starting price matters more than renewal stability, RBC is worth quoting. But if predictable pricing and responsive service matter more, it’s worth comparing against Jardin Auto, Belair Direct, The Personal, and Sonnet Insurance, all of which come up repeatedly in driver discussions as steadier alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is RBC car insurance available in every province?

No RBC covers most of Canada but not British Columbia, Manitoba, or Saskatchewan, where public auto insurers handle coverage instead.

Who underwrites RBC’s auto insurance policies?

Policies are sold through RBC Insurance Agency Ltd. and underwritten by Aviva General Insurance Company (Aviva Canada).

How can I save money on RBC car insurance?

Combine the 5% online quote discount with bundling, a clean claims record, retiree status, winter tires, an anti-theft device, or insuring multiple vehicles on one policy.

Does RBC offer a mobile app for car insurance?

No. Policyholders use the RBC Online Insurance hub through a web browser instead of a dedicated app.
